TINATAYANG mahigit P56 milyong halaga ng methamphetamine hydrochloride o shabu ang nasabat ng mga tauhan ng Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Bureau of Customs, at Manila International Container Port mula sa sinuring kahina-hinalang balikbayan boxes.

Sinasabing nagmula sa Thailand ang mga kontrabando na nakasilid sa misdeclared balikbayan boxes, na idineklara bilang household items, sapatos, at motorcycle parts.

Subalit nang suriin ng BOC ang mga bagahe at isalang sa X-ray scanners ay tumambad sa mga operatiba ang plastic pouches na naglalaman ng hinihinalang shabu na nakatago sa loob ng dalawang electric fans, at limang water heaters.

Agad ipinag-utos ng Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) – MICP na beripikahin ang nasabing shipment. Sa muling pagsusuri ng PDEA ay nakumpirmang shabu na nasa kabuuang 8.30 kilo at tinatayang may katumbas na P56.40 milyon ang laman ng mga bagahe.

Dahil dito, nahaharap sa mga kasong may kaugnayan sa paglabag sa Section 118 o Prohibited Importation and Exportation, Section 1400 o Misdeclaration, in relation to Section 1113 o Property Subject to Seizure and Forfeiture ng Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, at Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, ang consignees, senders at recipients ng naturang balikbayan boxes.

Pinapurihan naman ni Custom Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio ang mga tauhan ng BOC-MICP, sa pamumuno ni District Collector Carmelita M. Talusan, CIIS-MICP, at ang Intelligence Group.
